New York, JFK Airport's Light Rail System

IPEG Corporation, working together with Bombardier and Corrosion Services of Canada are investigating a remote current monitoring and faultfinding system at JFK Airport's new AirTrain light rail system. The system will detect stray currents that result from faults on the track's electrical system and prevent corrosion.

AirTrain is a $1.9 billion project that consists of an 8.4-mile light rail system that has six stations connecting JFK Airport terminals, rental car sites, parking lots and local subway trains. The AirTrain project is managed by a consortium known as ARTC (AirRail Transit Consortium) and is headed by Scanska USA and Bombardier who have a project site office with several hundred staff located in a Building at the airport. The project has strong parallels to the extension of Heathrow's underground system.

The 30 rail vehicles are powered by two linear induction electric motors. Power is provided through several substations that convert high voltage ac to the 750V dc operating system. A SCADA system controls all communication, monitoring and security functions.

Radiodetection are presently evaluating the technical and performance requirements of the application and anticipate developing a solution based on advanced locate and monitoring technologies of the Stray Current Mapper and ARRM systems.
